SPINOZA: BETWEEN THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE EARLY MODERNITY

The main ideas:

To present traditions of studies of Spinoza’s influence in European philosophy and culture which has not been studied enough in the Russian thought yet;

To demonstrate the continuity of fundamental Spinozian tradition in European thought which characterize the feature of Russian philosophy;

To continue the developmentof intercultural and interreligious dialogue representing the various philosophical and theological aspects of Spinozian legacy and looking at the matter from a different and original standpoint.

The historical and philosophical scientific symposium focuses on researching of medieval scholasticism in its relation to Spinoza’s philosophy.

 

Topics for discussions:

1.      Philo of Alexandria’s exegetics and its influence on the teachings of Spinoza;

2.      Jewish medieval culture and the philosophy of Spinoza: determinism and freedom of will;

3.      Kabalistic practice and rationalism of Spinoza;

4.      Arabic peripatetic thought (Avicenna, Averroes, Ibn Arabi, and others) as source of Spinoza’s metaphysics;

5.      Medieval sources of Spinoza's philosophy;

6.      Crescas and Spinoza: the doctrine of substance and attributes;

7.      Uriel Acosta and Spinoza: the criticism of religion.

 

Potential questions to be addressed include, but are not limited.

Contributions by researchers are welcome!

Must submit a preliminary paper subject and information about your position.

I hope to get information prior to 15 November.

Use Word or some system fully compatible with it. The length of the contributions may be up to 20 pages (A 4 size). Do not use other forms of emphasis than the cursive. Footnotes at the end of every page, and a list of used literature at the end of the paper.
